Rocket Lab survived its wilderness years with early belief from a first angel investor and support from government R&D grants, then turned a scrappy demo into real business by landing NASA contracts as early paying customers.
Startup Rollercoaster: Rocket Lab
The Spark – Backyard to “Let’s Launch”
- Peter Beck, a self-taught tinkerer in Invercargill, began experimenting with rockets in his shed.
- In 2006 he founded Rocket Lab, and soon after met Mark Rocket, an internet entrepreneur and space enthusiast, who became the company’s first seed investor and co-director.
- This first cheque and belief kept the dream alive in a country with no aerospace ecosystem.
The Peak – First Proof
- In November 2009, Rocket Lab launched Ātea-1 from Great Mercury Island.
- Credited as the first private rocket launch in the Southern Hemisphere.
- It was a small suborbital rocket, more demo than commercial, but it showed New Zealand could build and fly hardware.
The Drop – Brutal Hardware Reality
- Funding remained fragile: angel money, small contracts, and government R&D grants were stitched together to survive.
- Prototype rockets failed often. Hardware was expensive, and there was no local supply chain to lean on.
- For years, the team “fought fires” just to keep going.
The Reset – Turn Demo into Customer
- Breakthrough came in 2015 when NASA awarded Rocket Lab a US$6.9m Venture Class Launch Services (VCLS) contract to launch CubeSats.
- This legitimised Rocket Lab internationally as a serious launch provider.
The Discipline – Build Credibility, Not Hype
- Focus shifted to building Electron (a smallsat launcher) and Launch Complex 1 on the Mahia Peninsula.
- Rather than hype, they proved capability through technical execution and contracted missions.
The Climb – First NASA Launch
- In December 2018, Rocket Lab delivered NASA’s first dedicated smallsat launch under VCLS.
- The lonely years of prototypes and survival had converted into a repeatable, paying business.
